Wasn’t that old website kind of boring? And our previous URL,
it was so long and hard to remember. Well no more! Welcome to the new UBC Film
Society website. This site is new and fancy and makes it a whole lot easier to
find what you are looking for. Need information on the club? Go to
the about section. Want to know when that special executive
you are stalking is in the office? Check our executive
information page. Were you part of productions in the past and want to see
what you made? Well all of those videos are available in the
productions area.
Now, as with anything that is new and slapped together by an individual unpaid
executive in his spare time over the summer, this website will have bugs.
If you encounter these you can either just ignore them–the most popular
option–or you can report them to the
computer operations manager, Jeff,
and he will take a look at them.
This is just the start of our new website. Over the coming year we will be
debuting many great features that will make everyone super happy. For now
just sit back, turn off all cell phones and small children, and enjoy the show.
School is starting, and that means it’s time for FilmSoc’s annual
free "Welcome Back" screening! This year’s film will be
X-Men Origins: Wolverine! The film
will be playing nightly starting on Wednesday and going until Sunday at
every night. Bring your friends
for some free movie fun, and find out what they were actually doing to Buchanan
Tower last year!

detail about October, let’s look at some great events we have
coming before the end of September.
September Events

The week of October 12th to 18th begins with
the special Jason Mewes event and screening. Also coming that week
are two vastly different films. The first is the Las Vegas adventure
comedy The Hangover detailing
the aftermath of an unforgettable and yet unremembered bachelor
party. This film will play from Wednesday–Sunday at

Harry’s 6th year at Hogwarts and the beginning of the
war with Voldemort. It will be showing at . Both films are showing from Wednesday, October 21st
to Sunday, October 25th.
We end the month with a couple of classics. At
we will be showing
Good Will Hunting, a film
starting Matt Damon about a directionless genius who spends his days
cleaning floors and getting in fights. When his genius is discovered,
Will Hunting must make some hard choices in life in order to determine
where his future will take him. Good Will Hunting is a co-presentation
with Celebrate Learning Week. After that at
we are showing another
halloween-ish film, American Psycho,
about a wealthy investment banker who is secretly a murderous maniac.
Both of these films will be playing Wednesday to Sunday.
Bad news, it looks like Jason Mewes won’t be able to make it out to UBC
next week after all, so we won’t be holding the
Jay and Silent Bob Strike
Back screening next week like we planned. We are hoping to reschedule
the event, so check back in November for a new time.
November is going to be a big month at the Film Society with many
great films being screened and a number of events going on. Keep on
ready to learn about all the excitement to come.
We are pleased to announce that Jason Mewes is once again scheduled to
come to UBC. He will be participating in the
Mewesicology event, which
will feature a screening of
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back–in which Mewes plays the character
Jay–followed by a Q&A with the man himself. Tickets are $5 (no
member discount) and are available
online or at The Outpost in the SUB.
Later that week we will be hosting our traditional
beverage
garden for The Big Lebowski.

students and the public a chance to enjoy the film while drinking
a variety of beverages. An event not to be missed by and true
FilmSoc member. Doors at ,

We begin the month with a screening of the scathing film about the
fast food industry in America,
Fast Food Nation, playing at . This is followed at by the film about love,
(500) Days of Summer, staring
Zooey Deschenel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Both are playing from
to
.
The following week we have screenings of
Paper Heart, a sort-of-documentary look at love featuring Michael
Cera at followed by
the new Adam Sandler comedy Funny People
at . These films are
playing from Wednesday to Sunday with the exception of Friday in order to
make room for
The Big Lebowski Beverage Garden which will be happening that Friday.
From the 16th–22nd we are screening two
politically charged films. The first is
District 9, regarding the botched relocation of alien refugees who
were living in a slum in South Africa. This is followed by the English
political comedy In The Loop, covering
the leadup to a war in the Middle East. These films are playing at
and
respectively.
We finish of the month—and year in fact—with a Quentin
Tarantino week, featuring both one of his hit classics as well as his
latest bloodfest. At
we are playing Inglourious
Basterds, his new film featuring loads of Nazi killing. Then at
the classic
Pulp Fiction will be screened.
A double feature not to be missed will be the perfect way to start of
exam period.
Welcome to 2010 y’ll. We are starting the year off with
a whole bunch of awesome films for your enjoyment. But first,
let me tell you about our big event for the month.
Our first event of the year—and only event we have scheduled
for January—is a screening of The Dark Side of Oz followed by
The Wall. If you don’t already
know, The Dark Side of Oz is a screening of the first portion of
The Wizard of Oz with the
normal soundtrack replaced by Pink Floyd’s album The Dark
Side of the Moon. The album syncs up surprisingly well with
the film. This is followed by Pink Floyd’s
The Wall, based off their album by the same name. So come to
the theatre on January 29th for a very Floydian night.
We begin the month with Ellen Paige’s new film about roller
derby, Whip It, playing at
followed by
a crazy zombie comedy titled
Zombieland screening at . Both films from
to
.
While Spike Jonze might not seem like the obvious choice to direct
a children’s film, he does a great job in the recent adaptation
of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book
Where The Wild Things Are,
playing the second week of January at . Also playing that week is
A Serious Man, the new Coen brothers comedy about a man about to
lose his wife. That will be at . Both films from
to
.
At the end of the month Monty Python’s classic search for
the holy grail
will be showing from Wednesday to Sunday at except for on Friday because of
The Dark
Side of Oz / The Wall event. Also during that week will be
The Men Who Stare at
Goats at
from Wednesday–Sunday inclusive.
