About The Film Society
#
The UBC Film Society (aka FilmSoc) is one of the oldest and largest clubs at
the University of British Columbia.
As far back as the 1930’s, FilmSoc has been making films and entertaining the
UBC community through film previews, film festivals, and regular screenings.
FilmSoc has something to offer everyone. Our club allows you to be as involved
or uninvolved as you would like while still offering amazing benefits. Just want
to see cheap movies? FilmSoc has you covered!
Want to meet new people, volunteer, or
make films? We're the club for you!
Membership is cheap and the
benefits are endless.

Our Constitution #

last revised in 2009 and details the complete operation of the club. The current
club constitution as well as past consitutions are available for review.
About The Norm Theatre
#
The Norm Theatre is one of the most popular and well-used facilities in the
Student Union Building (the SUB). With its
rich past, the Norm has hosted speaking engagements from local notables
David Suzuki
and Mike
Harcourt, hosted film festivals and regular film screenings, and held various
conferences and lectures.
Since the SUB was built in 1968, the Norm Theatre has been an important part of the
building that is the “heart of campus” for UBC students and the UBC
community.
The Norm's official name is the Normand Bouchard Memorial Theatre. It was given this
name in November 1995 in honor of Normand Bouchard, a long-time FilmSoc executive
who had died earlier that year. Before the renaming, the theatre was referred to
as the SUB Auditorium.
Our Restore the Norm program helps keep the Norm Theatre in good condition. Fifty
cents from each ticket sold at the theatre goes towards theatre repair and
renovations. Recent upgrades include new carpet and new seats.
Prices #
- General Public: $4.00
- Members: $2.00
- Children (3–13): $2.00
Note: These prices apply for regular screenings only.
Special events may be priced differently and those prices will be listed on the
individual event pages.
In addition to individual tickets, members can also buy a punch card. This card
costs $10 gives you six punches each valid for either a single admission or a large
popcorn. More information can be found on the
membership page.
Volunteering #
FilmSoc relies on its volunteers for the smooth operations of the club. Most
volunteer positions relate to the running of the Norm Theatre, including ticket
sales, concession, and projection. Members who volunteer earn credits with the
club which add up to great benefits.
Booking The Norm #
The Norm Theatre is an excellent and inexpensive venue for all kinds of events.
Our theatre includes a large stage space, stage lighting, sound, a variety of
projectors, and 393 confortable seats. Past events include dance recitals, private
film screenings, seminars, talent shows, film festivals, conferences, and
fundraisers.
Other Club Resources #
Our club is not just about the movie theatre. We also have some other exciting
resources available including our excellent clubroom and the fun productions
program.
The Clubroom #
All FilmSoc members get access to our amazing clubroom. Located in room 130 of
the SUB, our clubroom features a huge HDTV, comfy couches, a massive
DVD collection, and a microwave and fridge.
Productions #
In addition to showing movies, the Film Society also makes them. The productions
department makes several short films written and directed by its members. Join
FilmSoc Productions to learn the in and outs of making movies. Best of all, every
year we put on a student film festival in which all of the films we have made as
well as many of your own will be presented.
Meeting Minutes #
As part of our constitution (see
Bylaw 1), the Film Society is required to record minutes at all
executive meetings and general meetings. These minutes are to be made available
to members of the club. Here is a list of minutes of executive meetings since
our last AGM as well as the minutes from that AGM. All minutes are available in
PDF format.
